What to Expect in a Somatic Therapy Session

Somatic Therapy in Practice: A Safe Space for Body and Soul

In our last post, we explored what somatic therapy is and why it matters. Now let’s talk about what actually happens in a session- what it feels like, what you might experience, and how the body begins to heal when given the right support.

Creating the Container

Somatic therapy sessions aren’t about sterile clinical rooms. Instead, we create a space that feels steady and supportive—soft cushions and bolsters that let your body finally settle. These aren’t just for comfort; they help your nervous system recognize safety and ease.

Simple, Body-Led Practices

You may be invited to:

  • Place a hand over your heart and connect with your breath.

  • Press your feet into the floor or a cushion to feel grounded.

  • Gently push into a bolster or lean into support to release tension.

  • Allow a shake, stretch, or movement to emerge naturally.

  • Rest in stillness if that’s what your body asks for.

There’s no “right way” to do this. Each body has its own pace and wisdom.

Our Role in the Process

We are here alongside you- not to force an outcome, but to hold space while your body leads the way. The goal isn’t to “fix” you, but to help your nervous system remember how to regulate itself.

The Heart Connection

You may notice that you feel calmer in the presence of another person who is grounded. This is co-regulation- our nervous systems syncing with one another. Research shows our hearts actually influence and attune in this way. In therapy, this natural connection becomes part of the healing.

Somatic Therapy as Medicine

Somatic therapy is medicine for body and soul. It supports the release of trauma, stress, and tension held in the body, while also reconnecting you with your natural aliveness. Healing here isn’t about being “fixed”- it’s about remembering your wholeness and finding your way back to balance.

Coming Home to Yourself

As you move through your day, try this simple practice: place your feet firmly on the ground, take a slow breath, and put a hand on your heart. Notice what shifts.

Your body is wise. Healing begins when you listen.
